Rattling can come from loose panels or parts, squealing may point to a blower motor or belt problem, grinding can mean worn bearings, and banging may be related to ignition trouble or ductwork movement. Humming sounds can also be caused by electrical components or a struggling motor. Strange furnace noises should not be ignored, especially if they are new or getting worse.
