Common furnace problems we repair

Furnace will not turn on

If your furnace will not turn on, the problem may be something simple or it may point to a larger system failure. Common causes include an incorrect thermostat setting, dead thermostat batteries, a tripped circuit breaker, a blown fuse, a bad control board, ignition failure, or a safety switch that has shut the system down. A dirty air filter or blocked vent can also cause the furnace to overheat and stop running as a safety precaution. If the thermostat is set correctly and the breaker has not solved the problem, an HVAC technician can inspect the system, test the electrical components, and find out why the furnace is not starting.

Furnace blows cold air

If your furnace is running but blowing cold air, the system may not be producing heat or the heat may be shutting off before the blower stops. This can happen because of a dirty flame sensor, pilot light problem, gas supply issue, bad ignitor, clogged air filter, or overheating shutdown. In some cases, the thermostat may be set to “fan” instead of “auto,” which can make the blower run even when the furnace is not heating. If the furnace continues to blow cold air after checking the thermostat and replacing a dirty filter, an HVAC technician can inspect the ignition system, safety controls, burner operation, and airflow to find the problem.

Weak airflow from vents

If the airflow from your vents feels weak, your furnace may be running but not moving enough warm air through the home. Poor airflow is often caused by a dirty air filter, blower motor problem, blocked return vents, closed or blocked supply vents, ductwork issues, or a dirty blower wheel. Weak airflow can make some rooms feel colder than others and may cause the furnace to work harder than it should. If replacing the filter and checking the vents does not improve airflow, an HVAC technician can inspect the blower assembly, ductwork, return air, and other parts of the system to find the cause.

Furnace makes strange noises

If your furnace is making banging, rattling, squealing, grinding, or humming sounds, there may be a mechanical, electrical, or airflow problem inside the system. Rattling can come from loose panels or parts, squealing may point to a blower motor or belt problem, grinding can mean worn bearings, and banging may be related to ignition trouble or ductwork movement. Humming sounds can also be caused by electrical components or a struggling motor. Strange furnace noises should not be ignored, especially if they are new or getting worse. An HVAC technician can inspect the furnace, find the source of the noise, and repair the problem before it causes more damage.

Furnace turns on and off too often

If your furnace turns on and off too often, the system may be short cycling. This means the furnace starts, runs for a short time, shuts off, and then starts again before it has properly heated the home. Short cycling can be caused by a clogged air filter, restricted airflow, overheating, thermostat problems, blocked vents, an improper furnace size, or a faulty limit switch. This can make your home less comfortable, raise energy use, and put extra wear on the furnace. If changing the air filter and checking the vents does not solve the problem, an HVAC technician can inspect the system, test the safety controls, check airflow, and find out why the furnace is shutting down too soon.

Furnace doesn't heat evenly

If your furnace does not heat your home evenly, some rooms may feel warm while others stay cold or uncomfortable. Uneven heating can be caused by ductwork problems, poor airflow, closed or blocked vents, a dirty air filter, thermostat placement, air leaks, or a furnace that is struggling to keep up with the home’s heating needs. In some cases, the problem may also involve an aging furnace, unbalanced ductwork, or rooms that are harder to heat because of poor insulation or window drafts. If checking the filter and vents does not improve the problem, an HVAC technician can inspect the system, check airflow, look at the ductwork, and determine why heat is not being distributed evenly.

What our customers say about our AC services

Kay Ward

Piqua, OH

Roberts Brothers Comfort installed a Mitsubishi mini-split system in my home this week. I have absolutely zero complaints with this company and the service that was provided to me. I never felt pressured during the initial visit with Brad at my home, he was patient and took the time to answer all of my many questions. My new system was installed in the quoted timeframe. The installers Phil & Stas worked diligently each day, provided periodic updates during the day as I was unable to be home due to work, and also walked me through each day’s progress when I returned home in the afternoon. The system is working great and Roberts Brothers Comfort really made the entire process painless. I would highly recommend this company.

Katrin Holmes

Tipp City, OH

Sean from Robert’s Brothers Comfort was absolutely wonderful to work with. After having a bad experience with another company that came out, he was truly a breath of fresh air. He was incredibly kind, courteous, and professional from start to finish. He took the time to thoroughly explain everything to me and even showed me pictures of exactly where the issue was coming from, which I really appreciated. He was patient, answered my questions, and gave me time to take notes so I could fully understand what was going on. What also stood out was how respectful he was of our home – he made sure doors were shut and lights were turned off without me having to worry about it. That level of thoughtfulness says a lot. Sean was very knowledgeable, honest, and genuinely pleasant to have in our home. I would absolutely recommend him and the company to anyone needing HVAC service.

Brad came out to estimate the job, and his expertise and thoroughness gave us confidence right away. Michelle kept us informed throughout the entire process, communicating every detail clearly and promptly.

When it came time for installation, our technicians, Phil and Clayton, were amazing—timely, knowledgeable, and reliable.
